Ontem meu avião pousou umas dez da noite e minha família estava lá me esperando, pronta pra me levar pra comer um lanche bem gostoso. A viagem foi tranqüila, apesar de eu quase ter esquecido meu laptop ao sair do trem que ia para Lugano (onde peguei um ônibus até o aeroporto). O Paul foi comigo até lá e ficou esperando na chuva o ônibus sair. Muito romântico... e triste! Hoje é aniversário dele e infelizmente não pudemos passá-lo juntos. Portanto gostaria de deixar uma última mensagem para ele: te amo, Paul! Feliz aniversário!

Obrigada à todos que nos visitaram durante esse período. Foi um grande prazer dividir a viagem com vcs!

Yesterday my plane landed at around 10 PM and my family was there waiting for me, ready to take me to have a comforting sandwich. The trip was nice, even though I almost left my laptop on the train to Lugano (where I took a shuttle to the airport). Paul made me company and waited in the rain for the shuttle to leave. Very romantic... and sad! Today is his birthday and unfortunately I can't be there with him due to the flight schedule. Therefore I'd like to leave him one last message: I love you, baby! Happy birthday!

E amanhã cedinho já tenho que ir embora, saindo de Milão à uma e meia da tarde. Estou triste, gostaria de poder ficar aqui com o Paul até ele ir embora. E que nós fôssemos embora juntos...

Now I'm here organizing my things while Paul is recording in Lucerne. Later we will have dinner at Beat's and tomorrow morning I'll have to go. My flight is at one-thirty in the afternoon from Milan. Na quinta depois do show do "Masul" fomos convidados pelo Thomas para jantar na casa da Marie-Cecille, que não teve outra opção a não ser fazer uma deliciosa massa de última hora. Ela já esteve em Chicago por quatro meses, fazendo parte do mesmo programa que o Paul está fazendo agora. Foi lá que eu a conheci.

On Thursday after the "Masul" performance we were invited by Thomas to have dinner at Marie-Cécille's, who didn't have any other choice but to make us some yummy last-minute pasta. She's already been in Chicago for four months, taking part of the same program Paul is in right now. That was when I met her.

Wilma is Marie-Cécille's daughter. She gave us a tour of the house and showed us some of her works. At 10 she's already an artist - she even composes her own music. When she was in Chicago she had piano lessons with Paul.

Assim que chegamos na estação de Zurique ontem à tarde vimos esta feira gigantesca, cheia de gente fazendo compras e almoçando (inclusive vários velhinhos tomando cerveja e batendo papo).

As soon as we got to the Zurich station yesterday afternoon we saw this wonderful market, full of people shopping and having lunch. There were also many seniors having a beer while talking to their friends and enjoying their meal.

Monte Pilatus - Mount Pilatus

Ontem o Urban, um amigo do Paul que tb é músico, nos levou para escalar o famoso Monte Pilatus. Corajoso, o rapaz. Mal sabia ele o grande risco que corria de ter que nos carregar nas costas montanha acima... A caminhada levou umas quatro horas, mas pareceu que durou bem mais. Principalmente porque fomos dormir super tarde no dia anterior, e às 9 já tínhamos que estar em Lucerna para encontrar o Urban. Ele tb foi dormir tarde, mas arrumou tempo pra fazer uma mochila praticamente mágica, com tudo que a gente precisava: comida (carne defumada, queijo, pão, pão doce, chá, água etc.), tênis apropriado e no tamanho certo para mim e para o Paul, meias grossas, casaco, protetor solar e até uma mochila extra para carregarmos nossas coisas. Nós não poderíamos ter achado um melhor guia! Eu só tenho uma reclamação: por que diabos não subimos de bondinho?

Yesterday Urban, a friend of Paul's who's also a musician, took us to climb the famous Mount Pilatus. Very brave guy! Little did he know that he could have ended up carrying us on his back uphill... The hike lasted about four hours, but it seemed a lot longer. Especially because we had gone to bed really late the night before, and we needed to be in Lucerne at 9 to meet Urban. He had also gone to bed late, but found the time to pack an almost magic backpack, with everything we needed: food (smoked meat, cheese, bread, sweet bread, water, tea etc.), hiking shoes on the right size for me and Paul, thick socks, a coat, sunblock and even an extra backpack for our stuff. We couldn't have found a better guide! I just have one complaint: why the heck didn't we take the cable car to go up? (Just kidding, Urban, it was really fun!)

O Thomas, que toca com o Paul em uma dupla (não sertaneja, ok?) chamada "Masul", veio ensaiar aqui em casa ontem. Eles vão tocar juntos na quinta. A propósito, "Masul" vem da junção do final do nome dos dois. Na Indonésia, lugar de origem da esposa do Thomas, é assim que se dá apelido às pessoas: pelo final do nome.

Thomas, who has a duo with Paul called "Masul", came to rehearse here at home yesterday. They are playing together on Thursday. "Masul" comes from the mixture of the end of their names, by the way. In Indonesia, where Thomas's wife comes from, you give people nicknames by saying the end of their names.

Ontem choveu quase o dia todo e nós aproveitamos pra não fazer nada. Ficamos assistindo episódios antigos do South Park na Internet e tb vimos um DVD bem legal sobre a mais famosa composição de Igor Stravinsky, "A Sagração da Primavera" (adoramos, pai!). No final da tarde o sol veio dar um oizinho e formou um belo arco-íris com a chuva que insistia em ficar.

Yesterday it rained almost all day so we took the time to do nothing. We watched old episodes of South Park on the Internet and also saw a great DVD about Igor Stravinsky's most famous composition, "The Rite of Spring" (we love it, dad!). Later in the afternoon the sun came to say "hi" and made a beautiful rainbow with the rain that really didn't want to leave.

Ontem à noite fomos ver um show em um lugar bem escondidinho chamado Mullbau. Ficava atrás de uma fábrica, uma coisa super moderna-alternativa. Como quase tudo que o Paul me leva pra ver... Eu adorei. Depois que o show terminou ficamos lá conversando e eu conheci pessoas mto legais, que eu infelizmente me esqueci de tirar foto. Fica pra próxima... O Paul vai tocar lá na segunda.

Yesterday night we went to see a show in a very hidden place called Mullbau. It was behind a factory, something really modern and alternative like most of what Paul takes me to see. I really liked it. After the show ended we hung out a bit and I got to know some great people. Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures of them. Maybe next time... Paul is playing there on Monday.

Ontem pela primeira vez nesta viagem fui visitar um museu. O Thomas ia vir em casa ensaiar com o Paul e eu aproveitei para ver um pouquinho de arte, coisa que há tempos eu não fazia. O que é uma pena, porque eu amo ir em museus, é algo que sempre me traz mtas idéias. O que foi o caso ontem tb. Estavam tendo duas exposições: uma de arte moderna e outra com mestres suíços. A dos mestres suíços estava ótima, mas o que mexe comigo mesmo é arte moderna. O que eu amo sobre a arte hoje em dia é que a técnica não é mais tão importante. Qualquer um pode ser artista, mesmo quem não tenha nenhuma habilidade (só pra dançar o créu é que tem que ter habilidade - créu créu créu créu... principalmente na velocidade 5, não é mesmo? Hahahaha, como posso viver aqui na Suíça sem essas tranqueiras, imersa em eventos culturais da mais alta qualidade? Difícil, mto difícil...). Anyway, vi mtas coisas legais e que me deixaram com idéias cabeça pelo resto do dia, o que é sempre mto agradável. Eu levei uma câmera escondida e consegui fotografar algumas poucas obras, até o cara do museu me dar um pito. Aqui vão duas das obras que eu curti:

Yesterday for the first time in this trip I went to a museum. Thomas was coming home to rehearse with Paul and I took the time to see a bit of art, which I hadn't done in a long time. And that's a shame, because I love going to museums. It always brings me a lot of ideas. It wasn't different yesterday. There were two exhibits going on: one about the Swiss masters and a compilation of modern art. The first one was really good, but what really thrills me is modern art. What I love about art today is that technique is not so important anymore. Anyone can be an artist, even if you don't have any special skills. I saw many examples of this. I hid the camera and even took a few pictures, but then the museum guy caught me. Here are two of the works I enjoyed:

Ontem o Paul foi ensaiar no estúdio do Thomas e eu saí na minha busca insaciável por brechós. Com um mapa na mão fui em direção a um que o Paul tinha me indicado. Andei, andei, andei e finalmente encontrei o maledeto, onde comprei apenas uma bolsinha. Lá elas me falaram de outro, que não achei. No caminho parei em uma loja de discos e perguntei, e me mandaram para o outro lado de Lucerna. Nessa eu fui caminhando pela cidade inteira e vendo tudo isto que agora vou mostrar pra vcs.

Yesterday Paul went to practice at Thomas's studio and I set off in my endless search for thrift stores. With a map in my hand I headed to one Paul had indicated to me. I walked, walked and walked and finally found it, where I got just one small purse. There they told me about another one, which I couldn't find. On the way I stopped at a record store to see if they could help me, and they sent me to the other side of town. So I ended up walking all over Lucerne and seeing all these things I'm about to show you.

Hoje nadamos no lago que fica em pleno centro de Lucerna. Fomos em um barzinho que tem toda uma infra pra quem quiser dar uma refrescada. Dêem uma olhada:

Today we swam in a lake that's located right downtown in Lucerne. We went to a snack bar that has great facilities for those who want to freshen up. Take a look:

Tem uma parte rasa onde as crianças podem brincar. O bar fica lá atrás. Antigamente homens e mulheres nadavam em áreas separadas. Era ado ado ado cada um no seu quadrado!

São três e meia da tarde e eu acordei há mais ou menos uma hora. O Paul foi ensaiar no estúdio do Thomas e eu resolvi ficar aqui descansando. Daqui a pouco vou pegar o trem para encontrá-lo em Lucerna, onde vamos nadar e comer uns petiscos na beira do lago. Mas agora tudo o que eu consigo pensar é no meu café-da-manhã composto exclusivamente por blueberries, que eu não como desde que vim dos Estados Unidos.

It's three-thirty in the afternoon and I woke up about an hour ago. Paul is practicing at Thomas's studio and I decided to stay here and rest. Soon I'll catch the train and meet him in Lucerne, where we'll swim and eat appetizers by the lake. But now all I can think about is my breakfast, composed exclusively of blueberries. I haven't had them ever since I left the States!

Ontem passamos a maior parte do dia arrumando a casa, coisa que ainda não tínhamos tido tempo de fazer. À tarde fomos até o supermercado, o que é sempre uma delícia de fazer em outros países. Tudo é tão diferente... E olha, supermercardo melhor do que esse é difícil: a seção de chocolates é um sonho! À noite o Paul decidiu colocar seus dotes culinários à prova, e olha, não decepcionou não: o macarrão estava no ponto e a salada uma delícia. De sobremesa, chocolate. Suíço, é claro!

Yesterday we spent most of the time cleaning up the house, which we still hadn't had the opportunity to do. In the afternoon we went over to the supermarket, an activity that is always fun when you're in a different country. Everything is so different... And it's hard to find a better supermarket than the one from here: the chocolate section is a dream! At night Paul decided to test his cooking abilities and he did pretty well: the pasta was perfect and the salad was fresh and delicious. For dessert, chocolate. Swiss, of course!

Originalmente o programa de residência do qual o Paul está participando duraria 3 meses, o que não daria certo porque ele tem que trabalhar. A outra pessoa convidada pra vir tb não poderia ficar todo esse tempo pelo mesmo motivo, então os dois resolveram se revezar: 1 mês e meio cada um. Este na foto acima é o Lou, que estava ficando aqui conosco mas hoje de manhã foi embora. Ontem passamos uma boa parte do dia com ele, batendo papos da melhor qualidade. Ele é professor de som no Art Institute de Chicago e sua esposa, Sandra, que infelizmente já tinha partido qdo chegamos, é artista plástica. Foi ela quem montou o jardim que temos aqui no quintal, logo no segundo dia em que chegou!

PS: A propósito, outro dia eu mencionei que o Paul estava regando umas plantas que mais tarde comeria no almoço, gente, são ervas comestíveis tá?

The residency program that Paul is taking part of would originally last 3 months. But that wouldn't be good for him since he had to work. The other person invited to come wouldn't have been able to stay for so long for the same reason, so they decided to take turns: half the time each. This gentleman pictured above is Lou, who was staying here with us but left this morning. Yesterday we spent a good part of the day having some high quality conversations with him. He's is a sound professor at the Art Institute in Chicago and his wife, Sandra - who unfortunately had already left - is a visual artist. She planted the whole garden we have in our backyard right on the second day she was here!

PS: By the way, the other day I mentioned Paul was watering some plants he intended to eat for lunch. Those are edible herbs, ok?

Final da Copa Europa - European Cup Finals

Ontem à noite fomos até Lucerna assistir à final da Copa Europa, em que Alemanha e Espanha disputavam pelo título. Eu fui meio que contra a minha vontade, e na estação comprei uma revista de moda pra me distrair, afinal eu sou daquelas que não assiste nem final de Copa do Mundo. Mas daí chegamos no bar e tinha um telão enorme. Além do mais eles apagaram a luz, então foi difícil de ignorar a partida. Resultado: eu acabei vendo um jogo inteiro do começo ao fim pela primeira vez. Eu, brasileira, vim aprender a apreciar futebol na Suíça, vejam só... A maioria das pessoas estava torcendo para a Espanha, e depois da vitória as ruas foram invadidas por vários torcedores barulhentos. Fiquei feliz porque eu mesma tb estava torcendo pra eles, por dois motivos bem arbitrários: 1. porque uma vez eu tive problemas com uma amiga alemã e 2. porque a minha vó Manoela parece com a rainha da Espanha (que aliás estava lá no estádio vendo o jogo toda pomposa).

Yesterday night we went to Lucerne to see the European Cup finals, where Germany and Spain were fighting for the title. I went against my will, so I bought a fashion magazine at the station to pass the time, after all I'm one of those people who doesn't even watch the World Cup finals. But then we got to the bar and there was a huge screen. Plus they turned off the lights when the game started, so it was hard to ignore it. I ended up watching the whole thing from the beginning to the end for the first time. I, Brazilian, came to learn how to appreciate soccer in Switzerland, you see... Most of the people were rooting for Spain and the streets were invaded by noisy fans right after the game. I was happy myself because I was also rooting for them due to two arbitrary reasons: first because once I had problems with a German friend and second because my grandma Manoela looks a lot like the Spanish queen (who was elegantly watching the game at the stadium, by the way).

Depois de mta badalação pegamos o último trem (lotado) de Lucerna para Sursee, onde estamos nos hospedando. Foi uma grande sensação de liberdade sair daquele bafo (literalmente!) e vir pedalando pra casa. Vejam que luxo, temos duas bicicletas à nossa disposição!

After a lot of partying we got the last (crowded) train from Lucerne to Sursee, where we are staying. It was really liberating to get out of that stuffy place and take a nice ride back home. We have two bikes available to us. Isn't that awesome?

Yodelê-i-i... Depois de comermos uma bela pizza (de novo!) demos uma passadinha em uma festa tradicional daqui, o Festival de Yodeling. Cada grupo de "yodeling" vem de uma certa região da Suíça e veste uma roupa diferente. Eles cantam em um tom super agudo, mas sem pronunciar nenhuma palavra, é só som mesmo. O Paul poderia falar mais dos detalhes técnicos. Quanto a mim posso dizer que achei o som super relaxante e que os brincos são tendência.

Yodele-e-e... After having a very yummy pizza (again!) we went to see a traditional celebration here, the Yodeling Festival. Each "yodeling" group comes from different regions in Switzerland and wears a different kind of costume. They sing in very high notes, but they don't pronounce any words, it's just music. Paul could talk more about the technical details. As for me, I can only say that I found it very relaxing and that the earrings they wear are really cool!

No sábado logo após visitarmos o Thomas fomos jantar em uma pizzaria com vários amigos dele e do Paul. Da esquerda para direita: Indah, esposa do Thomas (que embarcou para Bali, sua cidade natal, ontem), Jason (músico que mora em Chicago), Ayako (bailarina, esposa do Jason), Paul, Thomas, eu, Marc (músico daqui mas que já esteve em Chicago várias vezes) e Gabor (vizinho e grande amigo do Thomas, tem uma loja de discos e pede sobremesas em chamas).

O menino fofo das foto é o Dionis (fotografado acima com o Thomas, seu pai), 5 anos. A mãe dele é da Indonésia, o pai é suíço, e a mistura resultou nesta criança linda. Ficamos amigos assim que nos conhecemos, e logo já estávamos correndo pelo apartamento. Depois batemos uma bolinha, e é claro que ele marcou todos os gols!

This cute kid is called Dionis (pictured above with his dad, Thomas). His mom is from Indonesia, his father is Swiss, and the mixture resulted in this beautiful child. We became friends right after we met, and soon we were running around the apartment. After that we played ball, and of course he scored all the goals!

Hoje no final da tarde resolvemos pegar aqueles ônibus de dois andares que fazem um tour pela cidade. Um roubo: 20 euros (uns 50 reais) por pessoa pra dar um rolêzinho de uma hora e meia. Enquanto o busão andava por aí, ouvíamos uma explicação absolutamente hipnotizante em inglês via fones de ouvido. Aliás, quem ouviu foi o Paul, eu depois da terceira frase já estava quase dormindo. Ainda mais que nos intervalos ficava tocando uma musiquinha clássica de fundo... Então quem tirou a maioria das fotos foi ele.

At the end of the afternoon Paul and I decided to get on one of those double-decker buses to go on a tour around town. It was a rip-off: 20 euros (about 30 dollars) per person for an hour-and-a-half spin. While we were driven around we listened to a hypnotizing explanation in English through some earplugs. Actually Paul listened to it, I myself almost fell asleep after the third sentence. To make matters worse they played soft classical music in the background. So Paul had to be responsible for most of the pictures.

Acima está o bar "Jazz", onde se houve de tudo, menos jazz. Logo que entramos no bondinho esse foi um dos primeiros lugares em que o Paul reparou, e decidimos voltar ali mais tarde. Afinal ele queria conhecer a cena musical alternativa da cidade. Depois de uma janta deliciosa, na qual eu devorei uma pizza inteira com as minhas próprias mãos (costume local, hoje vi três moçoilas comendo três pizzas), nos dirigimos até lá em uma agradável caminhada. Ao avistarmos o tal bar, que bombava geral, pensamos: nossa, que povo mais superior, tanta gente apreciando jazz... MAS... ao adentrarmos o recinto nos deparamos com a mais pura seleção de eurotrash. Naquele momento tocava "Barbie Girl" (música a qual, aliás, o sortudo do Paul nunca havia sido submetido). Nós ainda insistimos um pouco, talvez aquela seria a introdução de uma banda super cabeça querendo criticar a sociedade de consumo. Mas não foi o caso. A única coisa de jazz que tinha ali era uma torneira de cerveja em formato de saxofone. Daí entendemos tudo e fomos embora, criticando a sociedade de consumo, suas músicas tranqueiras e o uso indevido do nome "jazz". Mas bem que a gente ia voltar lá hoje, só que comemos demais e resolvemos vir pro hotel.

Above you can see the "Jazz" bar, where it's possible to listen to anything but jazz. As soon as we got on the tram this was one of the first places that Paul noticed, and we decided to go back there later since he wanted to see a bit of the alternative music scene in Milan. After a great dinner, in which I ate up a whole pizza with my bare hands (a local custom - today I saw three young ladies having three entire pizzas), we headed there in a very pleasant walk. As we looked at the said bar, which was totally happening, we thought: wow, what superior people, such a crowd enjoying jazz... BUT... as we got into the place we were surprised by a horrible selection of Eurotrash. At that moment they were playing "Barbie Girl" (a song which Paul, by the way, was lucky enough to have never heard before). We still waited a bit, hoping that that would be the beginning of a very original performance by a band trying to criticize the consumption society. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. The only jazz reference we found was a beer tap in the shape of a saxophone. Then we finally understood everything and we left, criticizing the consumption society, its trashy music and the misuse of the word "jazz". Anyway, we were going back there tonight, but we had too much to eat and decided to come to the hotel.

O trânsito é bem tranqüilo e não se vê ninguém mto estressado pelas ruas. Às vezes uma reclamação ou outra, mas até que pouco para o diversificado trânsito da cidade. Aqui tem mta moto e bicicleta, inclusive vi mtos executivos e madames andando de duas rodas por aí.

The traffic is really calm and you don't see anyone stressed in the streets. Sometimes there's a complaint or another, but still very few considering the diversity of vehicles in the city. Here there are a lot of motorcycles and bikes. I even saw many executives and fancy ladies driving around on two wheels.

Uma das coisas que eu adorei aqui é que existem pedais para abrir a toneira e dar descarga. Só falta agora pedal para abrir portas, apertar ketchup, folhear menus e pegar dinheiro na carteira.

One of the things I loved about here is that you use pedals to flush toilets and open faucets. It would be great if they also had those to open doors, squeeze ketchup bottles, flip menu pages and get money from our wallets.

Duomo eu não sei direito se é uma praça com um monte de construções e monumentos ou se é a igreja em si. O que eu sei é que é um lugar em que os prédios são tão enormes que a gente se sente beeeeeem pequenininho. Acho que essa é a idéia de quem constrói igrejas, não? Nos colocar no nosso humilde lugar... Anyway, as fotos acima foram tiradas no tal do Duomo, e eu infelizmente não pude entrar na igreja. Nem eu nem várias outras moçoilas acaloradas. Dêem uma olhada na placa: nada de decotes, mini-saias ou bermudas. Perto de mim logo ao lado da entrada se enfileiravam todas elas, incorfomadas porém fresquinhas. Hoje estava um calor de matar... O Paul quase derreteu mas pelo menos conseguiu entrar e tirar umas fotos pra me mostrar.

I'm not sure if Duomo is a square with a bunch of buildings and monuments around it or if it's that huge church itself. All I know is that it's a place where everything is so big that we feel reeeaaaaally small. Maybe that's how people who build churches want us to feel, right? In our own humble places... Anyway, the pictures above were taken in this Duomo, and unfortunately I couldn't get in the church. Take a look at the sign: no low-cut tops, mini-skirts or shorts. Right by my side a lot of other frustrated yet refreshed ladies were waiting beside the entrance. Today was so hot!!! Paul was almost melting but at least he could get in and take some pictures to show me what it was like.

O Paul é pianista e ganhou uma bolsa de estudos de um mês e meio na Suíça. Eu sou a Isa e vim acompanhar o Paul. Nós estamos noivos e não nos víamos desde janeiro. Ele mora nos EUA e eu no Brasil. Nos encontramos ontem (25.06.08) em Milão, onde meu avião chegou. Resolvemos ficar na cidade por alguns dias e no sábado seguiremos para a Suíça. Já que temos tantos amigos resolvemos fazer este blog para atualizarmos todos ao mesmo tempo agora. Espero que vcs curtam a viagem!

Paul is a pianist and got a month-and-a-half musician residency in Switzerland. I am Isa and I came to be with Paul. We're engaged and we hadn't seen each other since January. He lives in the States and I live in Brazil. We met yesterday (06.25.08) in Milan, where my plane landed. We decided to stay here for a few days and on Saturday we'll head to Switzerland.
